Introduction
Discipleship is more than a concept—it’s a lifelong journey and a defining aspect of the Christian faith. It is a path rooted in the call of Jesus to follow Him and live according to His teachings. This journey is both deeply personal and richly communal, helping individuals grow in faith while strengthening the body of Christ. It is, of course, deeply biblical, too. Listen to what Paul writes in Romans 1:5, “the obedience of faith.”[1] What a powerful term often overlooked in much of the cultural Christian community. Faith requires obedience, and obedience is developed through discipleship.
Jesus articulated the importance of discipleship in the Great Commission, recorded in Matthew 28:19-20:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (NASB 1995).
These words emphasize the transformative power of discipleship and its vital role in every believer’s life. Faith equals obedience. By answering this call, we are following Jesus and helping others to know Him and grow in their faith.
The Transformative Power of Discipleship
Discipleship transforms individuals by aligning their lives with the character and teachings of Jesus. Our attitudes, actions, and purpose are reshaped as we learn to follow Him. This transformation is not meant to be kept private but shared in the community. When believers commit to discipleship, they strengthen the church as a whole, creating a foundation for a thriving community of faith.
Consider the story of Sarah, a new believer who initially felt overwhelmed by her faith journey. Unsure where to begin, she joined a small group at her church. Through consistent mentorship and encouragement, Sarah started incorporating spiritual disciplines like reading Scripture and praying into her daily routine. Over time, she noticed profound changes: she became more patient, compassionate, and hopeful. Her transformation inspired others in her small group and contributed to a growing sense of unity and purpose within the church.
Sarah’s story highlights the impact of discipleship, which begins with a single step but creates a ripple effect that extends into the community. It is through these steps that we, too, can experience God’s transformative work in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

Taking the First Step
Every journey begins with a single step, and the journey of discipleship is no different. Taking the first step involves a commitment to grow spiritually through daily practices like reading the Bible, praying, and connecting with fellow believers. These small acts performed consistently, pave the way for a life devoted to following Christ.
As disciples, we are called to grow personally and help others along their journey. Jesus’ invitation to “go and make disciples” reminds us that discipleship is not a solitary endeavor. It is a shared mission, a journey we embark on together as we build each other up in faith and love.
Whether you are taking your first step today or recommitting to your discipleship journey, know that this path is one of continual growth and renewal. Embrace it with an open heart, and trust that God will guide you every step of the way.
Closing Thoughts
The journey of discipleship is one of purpose, growth, and transformation. It begins with a simple decision: to follow Jesus and commit to daily spiritual growth. As you walk this path, you will experience God’s presence in new and powerful ways, and your faith will deepen as you align your life with His will.
Today is the day to take that step, whether starting anew or building on your faith. Begin the journey and discover why discipleship matters—not only for you but for the community of believers and the kingdom of God.

Love it! I have been a believer for decades and yet God is still transforming my heart. It is not a burden, rather, a blessing to follow Jesus and grow in faith. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Linda, that is so true. Spiritual growth is an ongoing adventure. For me I have discovered that it is not always forward. It can be a struggle at times too. The support and encouragment of community is important, even in an online format.
